Day 15 Houston to Jackson, MS

Ryan advised us to leave around 9 to avoid the craziest traffic, good advice! It was busy but we were never standing still. As we crossed into LA the scenery improved. We didn't have the mist or fog that Amanda said is so nice but you could certainly see how that would happen with so much water. At times there was open water between the divided highway.
Roads roads roads everywhere!

I thought Duane would like this sign

We decided to stop for an ice cream for a snack. When I Googled a place I discovered a Borden's! My dad worked for Borden's delivering ice cream to grocery stores when I was young and I have a small collection of memorabilia so I was happy with this discovery. It wasn't the best ice cream but I liked the old fashioned shop and I picked up at shirt with Elsie on it.

Ice Cream Pelican?

We went to Mandeville to eat lunch and enjoy a flight at the Old Rail Brewery. We both tried the gumbo. It wasn't spicy like I expected. Kira thought it tasted like pulled pork. I also had seafood cakes made with boiled shrimp and crayfish. They were very tasty. They served one of our favorite beers of the trip, chocolate milk stout on nitro. We wanted a growler but they only filled their own and they were out of growlers. Oh well...

After lunch we drove 4 blocks to the Gulf. Very uneventful!

Then we took a short trip to Abita Springs and stopped at the Abita bar and shared a flight of their beers.

Then back to the road and on to Jackson.

Look it's Utica!

When Kira planned this trip she was shocked to learn MS only had four breweries! There is one in Jackson but it wasn't open so we went to a place called Hal and Mal's. It had good reviews. It was a dive but they served local beer and I had my first green fried tomato BLT. It was delicious and something I want to try at home.

Then it was on to the hotel. Kira had looked for a campground but it had warned about alligators so we decided against that. We could deal with bear warnings but not gators. It was so hot and humid the hotel was a good idea anyway.
